Tariq Aziz Sentenced With Ten Year Imprisonment

Tariq Aziz was sentenced with a ten-year imprisonment.

Aziz was imprisoned for the executions of 42 merchants who were found guilty of profiting in 1992 and the suppression of Shia Islam in the 1980s.

According to a spokesman for the Supreme Criminal Court that “The courts issued a 10-year prison sentence against Tareq Aziz and Ahmed Hussein Khodayr”

Hussein Khodayr was known to be an aide to the late Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

It was reported earlier that Iraqi President Jalal Talibani has declared that he will not sign the execution order of Tariq Aziz despite the sentence vested by the Iraqi High Tribunal on October 26, 2010. Talibani also echoed the voices of the Iraqi Bishops, other Iraqis, The Vatican, Amnesty International, and the United Nations who called for Aziz to be spared from said execution.

Lee Hee-Won As South Korea’s New Defense Minister

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Tae-Young has been reported to have resigned from his post after the unexpected North Korean attack to a South Korean island last Tuesday. The government has accepted his resignation and how currently reviewing the profiles of potential successors. In fact, there are rumors that a security aide will succeed him.

The office of President Lee Myung-bak is currently reviewing the profiles of the candidates for the new Defense Minister. However, no official decision has been released yet. They accepted his resignation to improve the atmosphere in the military and to handle the series of incidents as what has been said by a presidential official.

Earlier today, it has been reported by the local news agencies that Lee Hee-Won has become the new Defense Minister. He is 61 years old and a former four-star general who became deputy chief of the US-South Korea Joint Forces Command in 2005. He retired from the military four years ago and became a presidential security advisor las May after the sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean warship.

The attack made by North Korea last Tuesday has been so far one of the worst incidents between the two Koreas since the end of the Korean war in 1953. This war didn’t end with a peace a treaty. As a response to the incident, South Korea has increased troop numbers on the island, Yeonpyeong, and would be changing its rules to become more forceful in dealing with similar incidents. The old rules have been criticised as too passive.

It seems that this war between the two countries would heighten up and will not end soon. South Korea is known to be an ally with USA while North Korea with China. Although the two countries are not involved with the war yet, there is still a possibility that help would be sought which would eventually lead to terrible war.

North Korea has warned that it will “wage second and even third rounds of attacks without any hesitation if warmongers in South Korea make reckless military provocations again”. As what has been written in BBC.
