Wikileaks Founder Arrested in London

Julian Assange, the founder of the controversial website Wikileaks has been arrested in UK early Tuesday. He has been hopping from one country to another for months already. This arrest is not related to Wikileaks’ activities lately but rather, for a sexually related lawsuit that was filed against him in Sweden.

The arrest warrant was issued last November 18 at the request of Swedish prosecutors and Interpol has followed it with an “international wanted-persons alert” in their 188 member countries world-wide. This is not similar to arrest warrant but “a valid request for provisional arrest” that has been respected by the member countries.

The sexually related lawsuit was an accusation of rape and a sexual molestation that he reportedly did to 2 women in Sweden. He hasn’t bee formally charged for it but would be held for questioning about it. His legal counsel Mr. Mark Stephens has confirmed his presence in UK and his appearance at a London police station at 9:30 a.m. local time Tuesday is by appointment. His attorney further added that he was in “good spirits” and his interaction with police had been “cordial.”

Mr. Assange can be transferred from UK to Sweden within 10-90 days depending on his stand of the extradition. If he agrees with it, it will take 10 days for UK to send him to Sweden. If he doesn’t, then his case will be decided in British courts that would take up to 90 days.

Mr. Assange’s document-leaking website has been facing a lot challenges lately as it has face series withdrawal of internet services. It’s domain provider EveryDNS and it’s online payment provider Paypal has withdrawn their services just this weekend.

Albania: Homes Still Underwater After Heavy Rains

Albania: Homes Still Underwater After Heavy Rains – The Interior Minister Lulzim Basha said that the country was experiencing its worst flooding in living memory. The Bosnian authorities say that houses are still underwater in the east of the country.

He added that the situation around the town of Shkoder was critical, with 14,000 hectares under water. Apart from that, other Balkan countries have also been badly hit, with three people killed after their homes collapsed following a landslide in the Boshian city of Tuzla.

Although the River Drin had risen to its highest level in over a century and now it has begun to recede, the level of water started to decrease. On the contrary, the River of Sava is now rising. It flows east into Serbia, but the government in Belgrade says it does not foresee significant changes.

Even though, the rains may be coming to an end, the saturated land and thousands of displaced people will cause problems for some time to come. The country is one of Europe’s poorest and least developed regions and it is struggling to cope with the onslaught of these floods.

Now, more than 12,000 people have been moved from their homes in north-western Albania after days of heavy rain. Levels of water in the dam of the River Drin were lowered to decrease the risk of damage.

Google Pays Only $1 For Trespassing

Google has been facing a lot of complaints lately on how they are taking pictures in the streets for their Street View program. These complaints include issues on how the cars, equipped with cameras, took the pictures of the street. A couple from Franklin Park, Aaron and Christine Boring, filed a complaint claiming that the search giant violated their privacy by taking a picture of their house and car used to do it traveled in private road clearly marked “No Trespassing.”

The lawsuit was files way back 2008 and last Thursday U.S. District Magistrate Judge Cathy Bissoon signed off on a consent judgment, a mutually agreed-upon verdict between Google and the Borings that the former shall pay only $1 in damages to the latter. Google has acknowledged that they trespassed.

The couple’s lawyer Gregg Zegarelli said that his clients are satisfied to have made the point that Google trespassed and realize they “can’t control a company such as Google that operates worldwide.” He also added that the amount of the judgment isn’t the issue. “This is one sweet dollar of vindication. Google could have just sent us an apology letter in the very beginning, but chose to try to prove they had a legal right to be on our land. We are glad they finally gave up,” according to a statement that Zegarelli made.

Google will continue Street View wherein it allows its users to view homes and businesses as though they are driving along a three-dimensional street.
